Escrima is known for its intensive use of weapons at the onset of training. The most common weapon combinations in Escrima are double sticks or doble baston, espada y daga or sword and dagger, single stick or solo baston, knife or balaraw and empty hand or kuntao.
Most of the observations throughout the Escrima is the distinction between training with doble baston, espada y daga, solo baston, knife and kuntao. This raises the question of whether to train with an Escrima system focusing only on a certain weapon or training all the different Escrima weapon combinations.
If you want to fast track your Escrima learning time, then ADAPTATION is for you. Adaptation in Escrima is the process of converting a technique from one weapon to another. Examples are double Escrima stick to single Escrima stick, single stick to knife. I refer to adaptation as learning 5 Escrima weapons simultaneously.
This means a single Escrima technique can be utilized in all 5 Escrima weapon combinations. This approach enables the Escrima student to focus on the technique rather than on the weapon(s) used. If an Escrimador is trained in double sticks and knows how to adapt it to empty hands, he/she simply adapts and applies the double sticks techniques to empty hands in self-defense situations.
Having a Escrima mindset of adaptability also means that you can convert everyday ordinary things such as pens, umbrella, magazine, car keys, etc.. into Escrima weapons for self-defense and applying Escrima techniques for that matter.
